In our research group we focus on public health for youth and other vulnerable groups. We contribute to integrated health and social care for vulnerable groups such as disadvantaged youth and families, or frail older people.

Using qualitative and quantitative methods we study how prevention and care practices and policies can be improved. We address socio-economic inequalities and study topics of parenting, (psychosocial) health, frailty, M-health, E-health, pathways to care and care use, healthy life styles and -environment. We apply co-creation, value-based approaches, the use of prediction models and ‘big data’ and implement large scale (randomised) trials. Our international research group conducts and leads European and (inter)national projects funded by Horizon-2020, ZonMw, and other (inter)national institutions. Within our research we aim to contribute to equal opportunities to prevention and care for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity etc.

Highlights

Wellbased: evidence-based urban policies for tackling energy poverty

Energy poverty is a public health issue. WELLBASED is about improving health, wellbeing and equality by evidence based urban policies for tackling energy poverty. Energy poverty is becoming a main challenge of the European welfare systems and beyond, abounding on the inequalities derived from living conditions and social determinants, with a direct and negative impact on health and wellbeing. Health problems attributable to energy poverty include respiratory diseases, heart attacks, stroke and mental disorders (stress, anxiety, depression), but also acute health issues, such as hypothermia, injuries or influenza. In the WELLBASED project a comprehensive urban program is developed, implemented and evaluated in six pilot cities in Europe.

ValueCare: value-based methodology for integrated care supported by ICT

ValueCare is a Horizon 2020 project funded by the European Commission. With the increasingly ageing European population, challenges regarding healthy ageing and independent living arise. Older people need to be able to participate in their care and autonomy. The objective of the ValueCare project is to deliver efficient outcome-based integrated care to older people suffering from cognitive impairment, multiple chronic conditions or frailty in order to improve the quality of life of the older people and their families and to make health and social care systems more sustainable. This will be achieved through applying principles of Value-based care and by testing the digital solution in seven pilots in Europe, including in Rotterdam, where stroke patients are the target group.

On the YouTube Channel you can find animation videos of the seven pilot sites in European countries.
